They are there for inspiration rather than for copying. Anything broad enough to appeal to a whole page of political science students is, by that fact, too broad for one dissertation, and the work of turning a prompt into a question is most of what a topic actually is. Look at the thesis titles on this page. Nearly every one names a place, a period, and something the researcher could count or read. "Does democracy work" is a seminar. "Why did rural Florida counties keep a party registration they no longer voted for" is a study. Political science is unusually rich in public evidence, so the constraint is rarely data. It is deciding what would count as an answer.

Crowded at the level of "voter turnout", yes. Not at the level of one rule in one place, which is where these dissertations sit: where a county puts its ballot drop boxes, what a voter ID law does to women specifically, what happens to municipal turnout when the local paper closes. Every jurisdiction administers its elections slightly differently, and most of those differences have never been looked at.

Usually not, and a good many of the studies here collected none. Roll-call records, election returns, parliamentary transcripts, party manifestos, court filings, newspaper archives and government documents are all public, and several of these theses are built entirely from them. One reads two decades of India's parliamentary Question Hour. Interviews earn their place when the thing you need to know was never written down. Check your department's position first, since a few require primary data of some kind.

Usually yes, with two honest caveats. You will typically need language access to the primary sources, or a defensible reason to work only in English, and you need to be clear about the fieldwork you cannot do. Several studies here are cross-national comparisons: Tunisia against Ukraine, France against the United Kingdom. What examiners object to is not distance. It is a country used as a backdrop rather than chosen as a case for a reason.

In all likelihood it has, in some form, and that is not a problem. Every question here is paired with a real dissertation that took on something close, which is evidence the shape works rather than evidence the slot is filled. What you need is a gap you can state plainly: a country nobody has compared, an institution where the finding may not hold, or a mechanism the earlier study assumed rather than tested.

You do not become neutral. You become explicit. Say where you stand, then design the study so that it could embarrass you: decide in advance what would count as disconfirming evidence, use sources your opponents would accept, and report the results that cut against your prior. Examiners are far more comfortable with a stated position and a careful design than with a detachment nobody believes.

It can be, if you anchor it to something still true when you submit. A thesis about one election cycle dates the moment the cycle ends; a thesis about how a rule shaped that cycle does not. One study above analyzes an appointment made in 2025 and frames it as an instance of something general: media visibility competing with credentials.
