What it covers
Over a thousand open-ended research ideas, grouped by discipline, the same list we’ve pointed 10,000+ students to. Not ready-made topics — a starting point to react to when a blank page is the problem.

Frequently asked questions
What format is the list in?
It’s a Google Doc. Make a copy to your own Drive, or download it in Word format if you’d rather work offline. Either way, it’s yours to search and copy from freely.
Are these ready-made topics I can just use?
No, and that’s deliberate. Each one is intentionally generic and open-ended, meant to get you thinking rather than to hand you a finished topic. You’ll still need to narrow it down into a specific research gap and a workable research question before it’s ready to propose.
How are the ideas organized?
The list holds 1,000+ research ideas, grouped by discipline so you can jump straight to your field instead of scrolling through the whole document in no particular order.
What if my field isn’t in the list?
Look for the closest adjacent discipline. Research ideas travel well between fields anyway, so something listed under Marketing or Public Administration can often be reframed for a related area with a small change of context.
How do I turn an idea into an actual topic?
Pick one that pulls at you, then work out what specific gap it points to, who or what you’d study, and roughly how you’d go about it. Our research proposal template walks through exactly that process once you’ve got a direction.
Can I combine ideas from different disciplines?
Yes, plenty of strong topics sit between two fields on this list — health and data science, say, or education and public policy. If you can justify why the combination makes sense, cross-disciplinary is a strength here, not a problem.
Can I share this list with friends or colleagues?
Yes, you’re welcome to share it in its original format (no editing allowed). If you post about it on your blog or social media, please reference this page as your source.
Can Grad Coach help me narrow this down?
Yes. If you’ve got a shortlist but can’t settle on one, that’s what our research topic evaluator is built for, or get in touch to discuss 1-on-1 coaching.
