This field is strict about who. "How do martial arts athletes within the Swedish senior elite experience that drastic weight loss affects their sports performance?" names the population, the competitive level, the exposure and the outcome domain in one sentence. Competitive level, age group and setting are all doing work there, and an examiner is likely to read their absence as vagueness rather than breadth. Notice the verb too: experience that drastic weight loss affects, rather than does drastic weight loss affect. That keeps the claim inside the athletes' own accounts, which is what interviews can deliver.

Different enough that you want to know which one you're in before you write a word. Physical education research is about teachers, teacher training, curriculum content and what happens in a school hall on a wet Tuesday. Sport science sits with athletes, clubs, training and participation. The two share a vocabulary and almost nothing else, including their literatures, so a reading list drawn from the wrong side is an easy way to look lost in a viva.

One person usually decides, and it is rarely the athletes. A coach, a board member or a club administrator grants access, and you want their written permission before you approach anyone individually. Ask outside the competitive season where you can, and offer a short summary of what you find back to the club. Team studies of a national squad, a university basketball team or high-level youth football sides all start with somebody at that level saying yes.

Narrow the question rather than widening the population. Elite groups are small by definition, and twelve interviews with national-level athletes is defensible where twelve with unspecified sportspeople is not, because the sampling strategy is what carries the defense. The other move is to change who you ask: coaches, PE teachers and club officials are easier to reach and answer different questions. Plenty of completed studies take that route and work on the adults around the sport.

Yes, if the archive is bounded. One completed study asks how environmental sustainability was defined by the International Olympic Committee between 1994 and 2008, and the date range plus the named body turn a limitless question into a finite stack of documents. Without both boundaries there's no point at which you've read enough. This is also the route worth weighing when club access falls through, since policy documents, annual reports and minutes need nobody's permission.

Where the parts need different prompts, yes. Splitting knowledge, experience and attitude toward injuries and injury prevention programs into three questions about the same group of players looks repetitive until you try to answer all three with one interview prompt. The split is also the shape of your findings chapter, so settle it when you write your aims and objectives rather than halfway through analysis.

In performance studies, the strong ones put them there. A question on cycle commuting speed that lists sex, age, weight, BMI, duration and cycling area inside the sentence makes for a long question, and it means nobody can suggest the covariates were picked after somebody saw the results. A grouping variable works the same way: say out loud that you're comparing students with and without experience of teaching students with ADHD, and the analysis is settled by the question rather than by the methods chapter.

Plenty of sport and exercise theses are written without any. Interviews with athletes and coaches, teacher surveys, club records and policy documents carry a lot of this work. If your question genuinely needs instrumentation, settle booking, calibration and technician support with your department before you commit the question to paper, because equipment access has ended more projects than ambition has.

Usually, as long as you handle the power problem in the open. Committees tend to want someone other than you collecting consent, taking part must not touch selection or grades, and your role belongs in the methods chapter rather than being left for a reader to work out. Being inside the setting is an advantage for access and for candor. It becomes a problem only when the thesis writes you up as a neutral observer.

Yes, and usually by a longer route than an interview study takes. Expect a health-screening step: a tool like the PAR-Q+ sends anyone who answers yes to its health questions for clearance from a physician or a qualified exercise professional before they are tested. Expect to state a plan for injury or distress during the session too, and extra scrutiny if your participants are minors or competing at a high level. Review routes differ by country and institution, so read your own ethics committee's rules early, because this stage can run weeks longer than the low-risk one.
