Use them to find your direction, then make the question yours. Every one of these is deliberately general, and a supervisor will ask you the same three things about any of them: who exactly, where exactly, and what you would measure. Somewhere inside "Health policy, systems and financing" there is a question narrow enough to finish in the time you have. Look at the thesis titles here: almost all of them name a population, a setting and something that could change. "Improving healthcare quality" is an aspiration. "Whether a standardized handoff tool improves safety or only improves the paperwork" is a study, because it names what is being compared and admits the interesting answer might be the disappointing one. That second half is what examiners look for.

They overlap heavily and the boundary is institutional rather than intellectual. Healthcare research tends to start from the delivery system, the clinician and the patient encounter. Public health research tends to start from the population and the exposure. The same question about vaccine uptake can sit in either. What decides it is your department and who will examine you, so ask before you frame the proposal.

Often yes, and a lot of the work here does, but plan for the approvals early because they take longer than the analysis. You will usually need IRB or ethics approval plus permission from the data holder, and de-identified extracts take time to prepare. Start those conversations before you commit to a design, since a topic that depends on data you cannot get approved is not a topic yet.

Not necessarily, and some of the strongest work here is by economists, data scientists and policy researchers. What you do need is enough clinical context not to ask a naive question, which usually means finding a clinician who will sanity-check your framing. The risk for a non-clinical researcher is measuring something that looks meaningful in the data and means nothing at the bedside.

Name the setting, the population and the comparison, then see what is left. "Telehealth in healthcare" survives none of those tests. "Whether a telemedicine follow-up in radiation oncology works as well as an in-person one" survives all three, and it is a real thesis on this page. If you cannot say who is being compared to whom, the topic is still a subject area.

Yes, but the useful questions have moved. Descriptive work on what happened during the pandemic is largely done. What remains open is what persisted: how chronic care patterns changed, what the workforce lost, which emergency adaptations were kept and which quietly reverted. Several studies here use the pandemic as a natural experiment rather than as a subject, which is the stronger framing now.

Carefully, and with the terms agreed in writing first. Insider access is a real advantage and much of the quality improvement work here depends on it. Settle in advance who owns the data, who approves publication and what happens if the finding is unflattering. A supervisor outside the organization helps, because they can say the thing you cannot.
