As a prompt, yes. As a submitted title, no, and not because anyone would object: each communication question here is pitched wide enough to fit many programs, so it needs narrowing to one population, one setting and one measurable outcome before it will survive a proposal defense. How to find a research topic is the walk-through. Check what your department expects too, since some want the question framed against a named theory and others want a stated gap.

Look at the titles here: they name a setting, a relationship and something being exchanged. "The role of social media in society" is a seminar. "Whether an emoji reduces ambiguity in a message or adds to it" is a study, because it names the artifact and the effect. Communication research is usually strongest when the unit is an exchange rather than a medium.

Both, and the split runs down the middle of this page. Content analysis, surveys and experiments sit beside interviews, rhetorical analysis and ethnography. The tradition you are joining matters more than the method: rhetorical and critical work is judged on the strength of the reading, empirical work on design and measurement. Find out which your department examines before you commit.

Usually you still need it, and the answer is less obvious than it looks. Public posts are not automatically fair game: many committees now ask whether users would expect their posts to be research data, and whether quoting one verbatim makes an account findable. Paraphrasing, aggregating and avoiding quotation of private individuals are common conditions. Ask early, because platform terms of service can bite too, and it is worth knowing what research ethics covers before you write the application.

It counts, and several theses here are built on it. Rhetorical analysis treats a text, a speech, a building or an image as an argument and examines how it works on an audience. It is not opinion: the rigor comes from a stated method, a defined artifact and a reading that can be checked against the text. Expect examiners to ask why this artifact and why this framework.

Existing messages are data, and much of this literature uses them. Press releases, transcripts, policy documents, platform posts and organizational communications are all analyzable without recruiting anyone. Check your own program's rules before you plan around it, since some require a primary data collection component regardless. Working from existing messages removes recruitment risk but raises sampling questions instead: be ready to say why these texts and not others, since "the ones I could find" is not a sampling frame.

They are subfields with their own journals and conventions, and they are where a lot of communication research actually gets funded. A health communication thesis will be read against health outcomes as well as communication theory; an organizational one against management literature. That dual audience is an opportunity, but it means twice as much literature, so scope accordingly.

By narrowing to an encounter. "Intercultural communication" is a field; how U.S. airmen navigate cross-cultural communication inside a rigid institution is a thesis, because the institution supplies the constraint.
