It asks about a group, a norm or an institution, and it usually names the material it will read. "How are the subject positions of child, mother, and father constructed in the district court's rulings in custody disputes?" puts the data source inside the sentence, court rulings rather than interviews, and names the three positions it will trace, so the coding frame is visible before the methods chapter. The verb is carrying weight too: constructed commits the study to the language of the rulings rather than their outcomes. Choose that verb deliberately, because construct, frame and make sense of are not polite synonyms for think.

If it would sit unchanged in a psychology thesis, you're probably asking about an individual when the field wants you asking about a position. Sociology questions tend to name the role rather than the person: shift workers, returnee students, Black women at predominantly White land-grant institutions. A person is where the data comes from; the group, the role or the institution is what the claim is about. Moving a question from one to the other usually means changing who the sentence is about, not what you ask in the interview.

Your ethics committee may also want a line on how you'll take consent from people you already know.

That's a finding, and often a better one than confirmation. Say where the framework held, where it didn't, and what your case shows that the theory doesn't account for. What you can't do is quietly drop a lens you named in the question, because your examiner read that sentence too. If it becomes clear early, changing the question is a conversation with your supervisor, not a crisis.

The cost is that one chain gets you one network and its assumptions, and a reader will ask whether everybody you spoke to already knew each other. Start several chains from different sources where you can, and describe how recruitment actually ran rather than only naming the technique. Either way, the sampling strategy you write up should be the one that happened.
