Social Work Research Questions

It names the people, the service and the setting in one sentence. "What is the relationship between foster youths’ access to budgeting and financial management services and enrollment at age 19?" names the service, the outcome and the age at which the outcome gets measured, so nothing is left to be settled later. It's also one of three questions built to the same pattern with a different service swapped in each time, which is how a vague program evaluation becomes three testable relationships. That specificity is what lets a small study stand up, because the question never claimed to be about social work in general.

For a question that specific, often yes. Completed social work theses rest on samples that size because the question is bounded to one home based care program in one province, one group of foster families, people waiting on a decision in one city. What sinks a small sample isn't the number, it's a question that promised something bigger than the number can answer. Check whether your program sets a floor, then spend the effort on who you recruit rather than how many.

Then ask about the people you can reach. The commonest mistake in this field is a question about an outcome nobody in the study can observe, and no amount of good interviewing rescues it. A lot of social work research is about practitioners instead: what stresses social workers, how they describe tension in palliative care, what newly graduated workers do in their first year out. Access decides the question, so settle access first and write the sentence second.

It can. "How do the family members of individuals with substance use disorder experience the effects of the substance abuse on their mental health regarding depression, anxiety, and stress?" measures three constructs while the experience is described, and that pairing inside a single sentence is what makes the study mixed rather than qualitative. Only write it that way if you're ready to do both jobs properly, because you now owe a validated measure and a full analysis of the interviews.

No, and a question that sets its own window saves you the argument. Asking about the experiences of students leading up to and including expulsion stops the account at the expulsion, so nobody expects the interviews to follow them into the years afterward. Bounding time works the way bounding population does. Say where the account starts and where it ends, and the scope stops being something a reader has to guess at.

Often yes, and it solves the access problem that stalls most social work projects. Two things get settled first: written permission from someone senior enough to grant it, and a plan for the power you hold over anyone you recruit. If you supervise, assess or hold a case for a potential participant, someone else does the recruiting, and a committee is likely to ask how consent stayed voluntary. Check what your own institution requires of insider research before you promise an agency anything.

It's possible, but it's the longest ethics route in this field. You need permission from whoever holds legal responsibility for the child, the child's own assent, and a plan for disclosures. In the US, where the child is a ward of the state, the board must also appoint an advocate for each child who is independent of the study and of the agency responsible for them. The thresholds and the words for them differ by country, so ask early. If your window is twelve months, ask whether the adults around the child can answer the question instead.

Settle before the first interview whether you are required to report, because it turns on where you are and what else you are. In the US every state names in statute who has to report suspected child abuse, social workers are on that list in most of them, and in around seventeen states the duty falls on any person who suspects it. What doesn't change is the information sheet: it has to name that limit in plain words rather than promise blanket confidentiality you can't deliver. Agree the route with your supervisor and the agency in advance.

Change what identifies it, then say in the thesis that you did. Drop the name and the town, describe the service by type and size, and check every quote for a colleague or a case that gives it away. Where the service is the only one of its kind in a region, complete anonymity isn't available: the honest route there is a named agency that consented in writing to being named, with the individuals protected instead.

It is, provided it asks something rather than only describing. The version that works names what is being assessed and against what: which victim needs the current aftercare system fails to meet, what barriers stop identified victims reaching services at all. A list of what an agency would like is a report. A question about the gap between what a service offers and what its users need is research.
