Psychology Research Questions

It names who you're studying, what is being measured, and what the analysis will do, all in one sentence. Asking whether the association between social support and caregiver depression is moderated by child diagnosis and ethnicity commits you to testing both interactions, to a caregiver sample big enough to support them, and to moderators you declared in advance rather than found in your results. A reader knows the analysis before your methods chapter says a word. Verbs like moderated by, controlling for and predicts are doing real work in a sentence like that.

Only if your research design can produce that effect, through manipulation or at least a gap in time between two measurements. If everything came off one questionnaire in one sitting, an examiner will usually read that verb as a claim you can't support, and the finding takes the damage rather than the sentence. Associated with costs you nothing and protects the result. If what you want is a group difference, name what you're controlling for inside the question: whether integration differs between adolescents with early and late disclosure, controlling for family type and age.

Naming it settles your measurement argument early, and it narrows what you're claiming, which is the point. The opposite move is legitimate too: asking how second-generation Iranian Americans define and conceptualize wellbeing says openly that no existing scale is being imposed, which is the honest opening when the whole point of the study is that a standard measure may not fit this group. What doesn't work is leaving the construct bare and deciding later.

Say whose resilience, measured how, and where. Wellbeing or resilience with nothing attached names a research area, not a question, and it is a common reason a proposal comes back for another draft. A purely descriptive question is fine once it is that specific: asking how common four named parenting styles are in a community sample of families with children in kindergarten claims no relationship at all, and it gives the rest of the question set something solid to stand on.

You can, but you'll spend a chapter defending it, and a validated scale buys that chapter back. Write your own only when no existing measure fits the construct, and budget time for a pilot and a reliability check. A published instrument arrives with a factor structure and reliability evidence you can cite: the Volunteer Functions Inventory is a thirty-item measure of six motives for volunteering, which is why a study can sensibly ask whether it was the right tool for one case rather than whether it works at all.

Not by itself. What sinks these projects is sample size: a mediation or moderation model needs more participants than a simple group comparison, and how many more depends on the effect sizes you expect, which is what a power analysis for your specific model tells you. Run that calculation before you commit to the design, not after. If nobody can see where those participants are coming from, ask a relational question now and leave the mechanism to your discussion chapter.

In most psychology programs yes, and the screening you build in matters more than the platform's reputation: attention checks, duplicate screening, a look at completion times. Two conditions decide it. Your ethics committee has to approve paid online recruitment, and your population has to actually exist on the platform. Caregivers of children with a specific diagnosis, couples reporting on each other, small national groups: those usually get recruited through organizations instead, and that route wants a longer timeline.

It depends what you're claiming. For a process that's general to human attention, memory or emotion, a student sample is defensible and ordinary. For anything where age, work, parenting or clinical status is part of the story, it isn't, and a reader will say so. Plenty of finished psychology theses name a population instead: caregivers, dating couples, stay-at-home fathers, employees at one financial institution, parents in a community sample. If convenience is the only reason for your sample, that shows.

If your study is confirmatory and quantitative, yes, and it costs you almost nothing. Preregistration is what separates a hypothesis you set in advance from one that appeared after you saw the data, and it gives you a straight answer when an examiner asks why you tested that particular interaction. Check whether your department has its own template or platform before you pick one. Exploratory work doesn't need it, as long as the thesis says plainly that it was exploratory.
