Nursing Research Questions

"Is there a difference between students' satisfaction at placements within surgical and medical departments?" names two groups, one measurable outcome and nothing else. A reader knows what was compared and what was measured before they reach the end of the sentence, which is the whole job of a comparative question. It also commits you to a measure of satisfaction chosen before you collect anything, and to recruiting enough students from both kinds of placement to compare them.

Nursing questions sit in one of two camps, and it is worth knowing which one yours is in before you start writing. The first asks what something is like: how patients describe an experience, what nurses believe about a practice, what the shape of a problem actually is on a ward. The second asks whether one thing moves another: does this intervention change that outcome, is this group different from that one. A lot of the trouble in a proposal comes from a question written in the first camp and a method built for the second.

An account, not a measurement. A question asking how faculty describe current practice in the student preparation phase of simulation is qualitative by its verb, before the methodology chapter says so. What you can report is what people said and how it patterns across them. What you cannot report is how common it is in nursing generally, so keep the conclusion at the level the verb promised.

A number, and only a number. Asking to what extent diabetes guideline indicators are being met for patients with multimorbidity across five nurse practitioner led clinics is an audit against a set of guidelines that already exists. The wording commits you to counting and makes no claim about why the gap is there. If you want the why as well, that is a second question with its own method, not an extra clause on this one.

Spell it out. Plenty of theses put an abbreviation in the question that the author had defined thirty pages earlier, which works inside the document and nowhere else. Yours gets quoted in your abstract, on your defense slides and anywhere somebody cites you, so it has to survive being read cold. While you are there, check that the outcome is a construct somebody has already defined and validated, because that settles your measurement before data collection starts.

In nursing it sometimes can. Scoping reviews and integrative reviews are both accepted as complete doctoral projects in some programs. It is only the easy option if you treat searching, screening and appraisal as the method they are, with a protocol written before you start, which is a different job from the literature review chapter inside a primary study. Plenty of programs still require primary data, so check your own handbook before you plan on it.

No. A lot of nursing research is about nurses, students and faculty rather than patients, which keeps you out of the slowest approval route entirely. Studying the people who deliver the care still tells you something real about the care.

Long enough to plan around. A university committee may turn a clean application around in weeks, while a hospital or health service board adds its own forms and often months. Where a study needs both, they tend to run in sequence rather than together, because the second wants to see the first. Timelines vary a lot by country and by site, so get the actual forms and the ethics requirements from both before you write the proposal.

You can, and it is common. The consent process has to account for the fact that they know you, and if you supervise any of them a committee is likely to raise coercion before anything else. Recruitment handled by a neutral person, and interviews held off the unit, are the usual fixes. Your own committee may want more than that, so read its guidance on researching your own workplace before you design the recruitment.

It is one of the biggest strands in the field: simulation, clinical placements, student retention, cultural insensitivity in placement settings. It is also the most reachable work for anyone who teaches, since the participants are already in the building. It tends to be judged on the same terms as clinical research, so the outcomes have to be defined just as tightly.
