As a prompt, yes. As a submitted title, no, and not because anyone would object: each environmental science question here is pitched wide enough to fit many programs, so it needs narrowing to one population, one setting and one measurable outcome before it will survive a proposal defense. How to find a research topic is the walk-through. Check what your department expects too, since some want the question framed against a named theory and others want a stated gap.

Look at the titles on this page: nearly every one names a place, a system and something measurable. "The impact of climate change on ecosystems" is not a topic, it is a field. "Whether beaver dams cool a stream or warm it" is a topic, because you can go to the Tualatin and put temperature loggers in the water. In environmental science the site usually chooses the question, not the other way round.

Both are usually legitimate, and plenty of the studies here never left the lab, but check what your own program expects before you design around either. Satellite imagery, long-term monitoring networks, USGS gauge records, national air quality data and museum collections all support real theses, and remote sensing in particular has opened questions that would once have needed a boat. Fieldwork gives you control over what gets measured; secondary data gives you time depth and spatial reach you could never collect yourself.

Pick one you can get to repeatedly and cheaply, because you will go more often than you plan. Several studies on this page are built on a single local basin, creek or city, and that is a strength rather than a compromise. What matters is that the site can answer the question: a well-instrumented stream twenty minutes away beats a famous ecosystem you can visit once.

It is genuinely interdisciplinary, and that is a practical problem rather than an intellectual one. A thesis that spans hydrology, policy and public health needs an examiner who can judge all three, and those are rare. The usual solution is a clear methodological home with borrowed context: an ecology thesis that takes policy seriously, rather than a thesis that is half ecology and half policy.

In many programs yes, and a good number of the studies here are exactly that, though it is worth confirming with your own department before you commit, since a few still expect a field or laboratory component. Modeling and remote sensing theses live or die on validation, so plan from the start how you will check the model against something real. An unvalidated model is a simulation of your own assumptions, and examiners know it. Ground-truth data does not have to be yours, but it has to exist.

Write it up. A well-designed study that finds no relationship is a finding, and in environmental science it is often a useful one, because it rules something out for the next person. The failure mode to avoid is a study so underpowered that no effect could have been detected, which is a design problem rather than a result. Think about detectable effect size before you collect anything.

It depends on your department, and it is worth asking early. Work on exposure disparities, risk perception and who bears pollution burdens is squarely environmental science when it measures exposure or outcomes, and squarely social science when it analyzes discourse or policy.
