What Is A Content Review?

Simply put, a content review helps you get the critical feedback that you need to enhance the overall quality of your research. We carefully review your written work (usually, chapter by chapter), and provide you with detailed, written feedback for each section.

The content review focuses on overall research quality, methodology and structure – not aesthetics. In other words, we’re looking at whether your core arguments are sound, your research design is justified, your writing is analytical, and how well all of this is communicated.

What (Exactly) We Look At

We critically review and provide feedback regarding the following:

  • The suitability and relevance of your research aims, objectives and research questions (i.e. the golden thread)
  • The diversity, depth and structure of your core chapters, including the literature review, methodology and analysis
  • Your use of theories, models, frameworks, figures and tables
  • The balance of description and analysis
  • The quality, relevance and structure of your core arguments
  • The suitability of your research design, as well as your application thereof, from data collection to analysis
  • The strength, structure and presentation of your conclusions
  • Softer factors such as structure, readability and flow

In other words, we review the “meat” of your document and provide plain-language, actionable feedback, so that you can improve the overall academic quality and earn higher marks.

What We Don’t Look At

This service is not a language editing or proofreading service. In other words, we’re not focusing on spelling, grammar and citation and reference formatting. We do offer an editing and proofreading service separately, which is usually the final step in the process.

Additionally, this service does not focus on the theoretical foundation of the work. In other words, our expertise lies in the overarching research process, methodologies, and academic writing – not in a specific research topic/area (this is the role of the supervisor).

How The Process Works

Getting your written work reviewed by one of our friendly coaches is straightforward:

  1. You book a date and time for your document to be reviewed.
  2. We’ll meticulously review your work and mark up your document with detailed feedback – then send it back to you.
  3. If you’d like, we can have a follow-up call to discuss the feedback in more detail, or to answer any additional questions.
  4. Once you’ve revised your work, you can book a second review to ensure the issues are all resolved (optional).

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most popular questions we receive about the content review service. If you have any additional questions, please get in touch.

Content Review FAQ

Is this the same as language editing/proofreading?

No, it’s quite different.

As mentioned above, the focus of the content review is on research quality, methodology, and structure – not aesthetics such as spelling, grammar, and reference formatting (which is covered by our language editing service). In other words, the focus is on the “meat” of the research, which is what earns the majority of the marks.

This is not to say that language editing and proofreading aren’t important. The two services go hand in hand, but at different stages of the writing process. If you’re interested in the latter, you can learn more about our language editing service here. You can also learn more about the differences between the two services here.

Should I get a content review or language editing/proofreading?

It depends on what stage you’re at and what you’re concerned about.

If you’re still in the early stages of writing up and want to make sure your core content is on point, your design is justified and your structure is appropriate, the content review service is the best option.

Conversely, if you’ve completed your writing and just want a final polish to ensure the presentation, formatting and referencing are aligned with your university’s requirements, our language editing and proofreading service would be more suitable.

Can you review my document in real-time during a call?

The content review takes place asynchronously to ensure the highest quality review and feedback. We will review your work, add extensive comments to the document and then email you detailed feedback. This is far more effective than us trying to hurriedly read your document while you’re waiting on a video call.

Of course, should you wish to have a call after receiving and digesting our feedback, we can happily do so. However, this generally isn’t needed as the written feedback is comprehensive and straightforward.

When is the best time to get a content review?

Ideally, you should get your written work reviewed at regular intervals, while you develop it. In other words, it’s far more effective to get your work reviewed chapter by chapter (or section by section), rather than having one mega review at the end of your writing process.

The reason for this is that we can catch problems earlier, before they have a knock-on effect on the rest of your document. For example, if there’s an issue with your research aims and objectives (usually presented in the introduction chapter), we can identify and resolve that before it has a major impact on the literature review, methodology and analysis chapters.

Can I see a sample/example of a content review?

Certainly. You can download a sample here.

Will you fix the errors and/or rewrite sections for me?

No, we won’t (that would constitute academic misconduct).

We will provide detailed feedback regarding each problem area, explain why it’s a problem, and how to go about fixing it. We can also follow up with a live call to discuss any issues in more detail and guide you on how to resolve it.

Can I have a business/psychology/health expert review my work?

The focus of the content review is on the overall research quality, methodology and structure – not the theoretical underpinnings. In other words, our expertise lies in the research process itself, not in a specific research topic or area. This allows us to work across a wide variety of research disciplines.

Simply put, while our coaches have a diverse background in terms of research disciplines (including business/management, psychology, linguistics, healthcare, etc.), we do not claim or aim to be subject matter experts for every possible topic (which would be impossible in practice). Subject matter expertise is the role of the supervisor/advisor (you can learn more about this here). If you’re looking for a subject matter expert, it would be more suitable to seek out a subject tutor, rather than a dissertation/research coach.

How much does the content review cost?

We typically require 1 hour to review 1500 words of content, although this can vary depending on the complexity and quality of the writing.

The cost per hour depends on which package you opt for. You can learn about our packages and pricing here.
